While 802.11n operates on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency band, 802.11ac predominantly uses the 5 GHz band which by its nature traditionally reduces coverage when compared to 2.4 GHz. This led to costly and time consuming efforts for installers to ensure that sufficient APs were installed to give complete coverage.
